E-Newsletter - May 2010
Welcome to the May issue of the SEEDA Women’s Enterprise Ambassadors Network newsletter.
We all acknowledge that the economic downturn has been a very challenging time for businesses across the South East. As many of you know, SEEDA has also been through significant change during this time. As a result of central government funding cuts, reductions in property values and a need to effectively respond to changing business needs, SEEDA has re-structured and reduced its head count. Moving forward, SEEDA will be prioritizing the following three key areas:
- international trade and inward investment, nurturing global companies;
- innovation, through collaborations to commercialise new ideas; and
- business growth, through
excellent infrastructure and expert support
This month, we’re celebrating women breaking through the glass ceiling in the film industry, inspired by the first female to win Best Director at the Academy Awards. Our very own film focused Advocate gives her views about the win and what it means for the rest of the industry. Also in a starring role, one Ambassador champions the cause of Women’s Enterprise live on radio and we focus on Social Enterprise.
I am delighted that we have recruited an Advocate who runs a social enterprise - more details about social enterprises are in this issue. I am fully supportive of this business model, having established and run a social enterprise business support service (Social Enterprise Berkshire) for six years prior to joining SEEDA.
We are pleased to learn that a cross-party group of MPs has been assembled as ‘The Women and Enterprise Group’ to examine obstacles currently standing in the way of more women becoming entrepreneurs.
I hope you will find this issue interesting and may I take this opportunity to wish you ongoing success with your businesses.
Best wishes,
Claire Gillon
