E-Newsletter - June 2010

Welcome to the Summer issue of the SEEDA Women’s Enterprise Ambassadors Network newsletter.

This month’s newsletter looks at the pay gap that still exists between men and women, despite it being forty years since the Equal Pay Act came into force. The Equality and Human Rights Commission is calling on organisations to do more to close the gap and I’m sure you’ll all agree this is a cause we need to back.

We also have news on events that our Advocates and Ambassadors have been involved with. Read about how Women’s Enterprise Ambassador Jackie Arnold has set up an award for young speakers in her area and Advocate Jacky Charman presented the winners with their trophies at the Hampshire Winning Women Business Awards. Or hear how several WE Advocates and Ambassadors addressed young audiences at Brooklands College.

Since our last newsletter, we have a new government in place. It has vastly different policies to the last with regard to developing enterprise in the UK and their approach is also coloured to a large extent by their aim of cutting the UK’s budget deficit.

You may have heard the news that all nine of the regional development agencies will be phased out, and as such, there will be no future funding available from SEEDA for Women’s Enterprise in the South East.

A working group of Advocates and Ambassadors has met twice since the announcement to discuss ways in which the network can continue to promote Women’s Enterprise in the South East and build on the experience and resources we have built up. We would love to have your support in taking the network forwards - please let me know if you'd like to be involved. The passion and dedication of our members is clear, and we will keep you informed in advance of future plans as they develop.

Much has been achieved through the hard work put in by our networks of Advocates and Ambassadors. You should be proud of yourselves – we certainly are!

Best wishes,

Claire Gillon
